Unbelievable;Payton Sandfort announce his resignation and departure from WNBA today after…….

IOWA CITY — Iowa basketball’s Payton Sandfort has received an invitation to the 2024 NBA Draft Combine, it was announced Friday.

Sandfort is going through the NBA Draft process while maintaining his college eligibility. The NBA Draft Combine is an opportunity to showcase his skills in front of evaluators and raise his stock.

The combine is held in Chicago in mid-May.

Sandfort’s junior season was his most productive at Iowa. He averaged 16.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while shooting 37.9% from deep (all career-highs). A third-team All-Big Ten selection, Sandfort took his game to another level in the latter stages of the season. He scored in double-figures in 10 of Iowa’s last 11 games, which included recording the program’s first triple-double.

Going through the process can be beneficial for Sandfort to get information on how NBA decision-makers view his game and what he needs to work on to succeed at the next level. He has one season of college eligibility remaining.

Sandfort recently was tabbed at No. 41 on The Athletic’s 2024 NBA Draft Big Board, which would make him a second-round pick. It’s important to note that there is still time for movement before the draft and projections are not an exact science.

Whether Sandfort pursues a professional career or returns to college is one of the biggest dominoes for Iowa this offseason.

The Hawkeyes have a young foundation that gives optimism for the future, which includes the reigning co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year Owen Freeman and Payton’s younger brother, Pryce. The Hawkeyes also added Morehead State transfer Drew Thelwell this offseason.
