Boomer Esiason rips New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll (left) and quarterback Daniel Jones.
No matter what happens when the Giants host the Eagles on Sunday, the 2023 season has been a failure.
Former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason, who briefly played for the Jets in the 1990s, thinks the blame for this lies on the team’s quarterback situation, namely Daniel Jones. He said so while expressing sadness over the Giants wasting Saquon Barkley and Sterling Shepard’s start to their careers on Thursday.
“I hope [Barkley] gets a fresh start somewhere else. I really do,” Esiason said on WFAN, via Audacy. “Unfortunately for him and Sterling Shepard, the passing game has been basically non-existent for the Giants for seven years. And they’re in the middle of it. And a lot of it comes from … does the quarterback generate extra plays?”
Since the Giants drafted Jones sixth overall in 2019, the 26-year-old quarterback has provided inconsistent production. In 60 career games (59 starts), he has a 64.3 completion percentage with 62 touchdowns and 40 interceptions, a quarterback rating of 85.2.
After a promising season in 2022 — Jones led the Giants to their first playoff appearance since 2016 — the team rewarded him with a four-year, $160 million contract. But in 2023, the inconsistencies continued as Jones struggled to stay healthy.
These are questions Esiason doesn’t have the answer to.
“There are a lot of guys across the league that are the unquestioned leaders … like, who is their Lamar Jackson? They don’t have one.
