Despite having the option to become a free agency in the offseason, Gary Trent Jr. chose to remain with the Raptors.
In 2021, the 24-year-old and Toronto agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract extension. Trent used the player option he received with his agreement, which was good for the 2023–24 season, to postpone his free agency.
Unless he and the Raptors agree to another agreement, Trent will now be eligible to become an unrestricted free agency in 2024. According to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, Trent picked up his option, and the two were in the process of “finalizing a lucrative multiyear extension.” But three months later, nothing has shown up.
Here are further details about Trent’s contract status and the possible extension.
Trent used his contract’s player option for the 2023–2024 campaign. After O.G. Anunoby, Pascal Siakam, and Jakob Poeltl, he will be the fourth-highest paid player on the squad with a salary of $18.6 million.
In the offseason of 2024, Trent is expected to be available as an unrestricted free agent. He’ll be among the greatest shooters on the market.
ESPN’s Michael Grange reports that Trent is free to agree to a four-year, $113.6 million contract extension with the Raptors.
Recently, Blake Murphy of Sportsnet noted on “The Lowe Post” that he was taken aback to learn that Trent and the Raptors were getting close to a contract since he had “always gotten the impression that Trent’s camp had more expensive eyes than maybe the Raptors would with him.”
Trent’s decision to opt in, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, may have been a sign that “they didn’t find what they were perhaps looking for on the broader market.”
During 2020–21, Trent was acquired by the Raptors. 2021–2022 was his breakout year; he finished near the top of the league in thefts and deflections, scoring a career-best 18.3 points per game.
