As he approaches free agency, NFL great Tyron Smith has no intention of quitting football just yet. The left lineman still hopes to play a longer season with the Dallas Cowboys. The 33-year-old is hoping for an extension from the AFC team, but he will become a free agent next month if he is not given a new contract. No offer has been made as of yet.
In 2024, the eight-time Pro Bowler had one of his best seasons ever with the Cowboys, starting 13 games and earning a spot on the second team of the All-Pro squad.
According to a report from Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Smith has ‘no plans’ to hang up his cleats and is eyeing a late change of heart from his team.
And recent comments from coach Mike McCarthy, who is staying for the 2024-25 campaign, suggest he may have a shot at earning a deal if he can stay injury-free in the offseason.
“I think the biggest thing for Tyron is, talking about the path of the season and the training plan that was in place for him, this is clearly his best season that I have experienced with him since 2020,” McCarthy said last month at his season-ending news conference.
“So, he felt good about that. I think the fact that he’s not going into the offseason with offseason surgeries is a plus. We’ll continue to talk as we move forward.”
Smith may have put his injury problems behind him after struggling to shake off a number of recurring issues that have plagued his peak years in the NFL. He hasn’t played a full season since 2015 and missed 51 games of 131 in the same period.
However, there will be some concerns about how the Cowboys recruited a long-term replacement – and Smith‘s departure as a free agent may be in their best interests.
