The Eastern Conference has its injury replacements for the 2024 NBA All-Star Game.

The NBA announced Tuesday that Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young and Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes will participate in the game. They are replacing Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid (knee) and New York Knicks forward Julius Randle (dislocated shoulder).

Embiid was selected as a starter, while Randle was named a reserve.

Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers will lead the Eastern Conference All-Stars and will choose someone from the reserves on the roster to replace Embiid in the starting lineup.

The All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 18 in the home of the Indiana Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It will air on TNT at 8 p.m. ET.

This year’s format is a return to the traditional one featuring the best players in the Eastern Conference against the best players in the Western Conference. Team captains have chosen players regardless of conferences in the past six events, but things are returning to how they previously operated.

Young and Barnes will look to help the Eastern Conference snap a three-game losing streak and stretch that has seen them drop six of the last seven to the Western Conference from 2011 through 2017.

Barnes, who is making his first All-Star Game appearance, can be a matchup problem with his ability to defend multiple positions on one end while scoring inside or from beyond the arc on the other.

He is averaging 20.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from deep. The 2021-22 Rookie of the Year can impact the game in several ways and could stuff the stat sheet in an up-and-down All-Star Game.

This will be Young’s third All-Star Game and first since the 2021-22 campaign.

The Hawks’ ball-handler can catch fire from three-point range at a moment’s notice and carry his team offensively for extended stretches. He is averaging 27.3 points and 10.9 assists per game while shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from beyond the arc.
