Reactions From Jannik Sinner Defeating Novak Djokovic at the Davis Cup Final

After defeating Novak Djokovic in the competition’s final, Jannik Sinner—the Davis Cup hero—celebrated the Italian team’s 47-year trophy drought on Sunday in Malaga.

Jannik Sinner defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets in the second singles round, while Matteo Arnaldi defeated Alexei Popyrin in a close match to win Italy’s second trophy.

Sinner, ranked fourth in the world, was crucial to Italy’s Davis Cup victory in 2023. He had won all five of his rubber matches, including two on Saturday against Novak Djokovic, the top-ranked player in the world, and Serbia.

Although it was fantastic to win the competition for the first time, the 22-year-old remarked that he would rather see Italy win it again.

The Italian stated that the reason his side succeeded was because they helped each other out while trying to win their country’s first Davis Cup since 1976.

Jannik Sinner told reporters on Sunday, “We are all very young, and we are really hungry to try to win it one more time in our life, but in another way, you know, having this feeling at least once, it is a really special feeling.”

Days after falling short against Djokovic in the ATP Finals, Sinner traveled to Spain for the Davis Cup knockout stages. However, that was irrelevant in the Davis Cup final as he exacted perfect retribution on the legendary Serbian tennis player.

“I played coming from Turin, I gave 100 percent, all I had,” he went on.

“I believe that the team as a whole encouraged one another, and this may be the main reason we are holding this trophy here.”
